LESSON PLAN-THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE PRESENT PERFECT AND THE SIMPLE PAST TENSE

Today, I  have used the following lesson plan to explain the differences between the present perfect tense and the simple past tense. I have  found it  both very effective  and easy to prepare.Later  I am going to post my reflection about  its application here..
Hope it helps :)

Class size: 20 students

Age: 12-13

Level: Pre-intermediate

Target Language:  Differences between Simple past tense and present perfect tense

Skill: Writing  and speaking.

Material: Handout, flash cards

Previous knowledge: The Simple past tense and  the Present perfect tense

 Objectives: By the end of the lesson, students will able to;

-recognize  past simple and past perfect sentences
-recognize the time expressions that go with the present perfect and simple past tenses
-distinguishing and using the present perfect tense and the simple past tense.
-find the mistakes and correct in the given sentences.

Stage 1) Warm-up activity (5 minutes) (  T----S, S----T)

·        First teacher announces that  they are going to learn something very important.
·         TheTeacher asks whether the students remember the simple past tense or not.

Stage 2) Presantation ( 15 minutes) (Interaction: T ----S, S----T)

·        Teacher writes  various sentences  in the simple past tense and present prefect tense.
·        She explains  how to form negative, postive sentences and questions in both tenses.
·        Underlines verbs and time exspressions.

Stage 3) Practising ( 20 minutes) (  T----S, S-----S, S----T)

·        Teacher shows flash cards to practice time expressions.
(Teacher shows a time expression, for instance, never  and Sts decide whether it goes with the present perfect or the simple past tense)
·        This time teacher shows some sentences written in either the present perfect or the simple past tense ( Bigger flash cardsJ).
·        Then she asks which tense is used in the sentences:
Student : “Present perfect”
then she asks “ How do you know that?”
Student :  because of  JUST ,YET..etc.
Then the teacher asks the students change the sentence into The simple past tense.( I especially liked this part..)
·        Teacher distributes handout  which includes three parts ( see the sample )
·        Teacher monitors the students as they are working on the task ( Pair work and pair check)
