WHAT IS DATA-LEARNING

  • What Harold Palmer said reminded me content-based instruction.Focus in CBI should be  on content instead of linguistic forms of the target language. It  uses authentic materials that are not prepared specifically  for language instruction just  like  CLT and uses real or authentic tasks like  Task based and content based instruction
  • DDL puts the learner in the center of the teaching/ learning process .
  • In my opinion, DDL can be used for both  individual and group works.
  • Computers can enhance the teaching environment. For example concordances can be used although some teachers think that They are very time consuming.
  • I want to share the following as an example of DDL activity  (Gregory Hadley,  http://www.nuis.ac.jp/~hadley/publication/windofchange/windsofchange.htm )
"One example of DDL's potential as a pedagogic resource will suffice. In Japan, language learners still memorize sentences such as "The food was eaten by me." However, such a sentence would strike most native speakers as odd. Instead of trying to explain to learners why it is odd simply from insight, we can direct our students to look at tangible examples from the corpus. Using a corpora/concordances package (Collins COBUILD English Collocations, 1995), they find that "eaten" does in fact collocate most commonly with the word "food." The learners are then provided with the following samples taken from COBUILD's Bank of English (see Figure Four). They may then notice how the authentic language samples differ from their usage of the word "eaten."

Vocabulary Profile

  • I tried to do this task but I could not take the picture.
  • I can use Wordle , for example, to introduce a new topic. It can be very interesting especially for visual learners.
  • I think it is a very effective way of drawing attention of  students. It can be used for teaching vocabulary.
  • I can show a cloud and I may want my students write an essay by using the words included in the cloud.( a kind of creative writing activity)
  • Also I can use it to show collocations.

Concordle

  • it is an interesting tool .I really want to use it for some presentations.
  • yes, it provides extra information.it does not only show the  frequency of  the words used in text  but also it shows us how those words are  used in context and also it provides us to see the  collocations.

My twitter experience

I am thinking on what makes people use Twitter. The only difference I found  is  that  you can follow whoever you want without permission.Otherwise I can do the same things by using Facebook. For example; I can share some news, videos, links and ideas.I looked at some twits of my followings to analyze the nature of Twitter. Then I realized that they are definitely short and mostly the twits directs you somewhere to get more information, but it is not very distinctive, We can do all these things via Facebook .So I came to same conclusion that I said at the beginning  .The users of twitter is more generous to share their private or professional life.To follow some people who have good experience and knowledge on your subject definitely would be very meaningful.I think I can use twitter for  only this reason.I believe that Twitter will not be an  alternative to my  blog in Language teaching .For me Twitter can be more useful for graduate students who specialize in a particular subject or some students who like to learn more about their field, but not for high school students.

reflection onBlogging

I have Just visited Burcu's and Ozge's Blogs . I am now their followers.I have read their ideas how to use a blog in Language teaching and I have made some comments.I saw that  they also  eager to use blogs for professional purposes. It was a nice  experience to learn their ideas and share mine with my colleagues.Although i have been blogging for few weeks,I liked this experience. It is very personal.I really like the sense of ownership that my Blog gives me.It gives me freedom on writing and sharing what I want.It also  gives me a space to practice what I learned. My current project as a student is  to use my Blog as a kind of diary which gives me great opportunity for writing  and also  as a portfolio where I store everything useful for me.Moreover,in future, My blog is going to be  a handy tool  to organize  and to share my ideas on my profession.I also  will use my blog to improve my teaching  and to boost teaching outcomes  that I mentioned my previous post.

Blogs in Languge Teaching

Blogs can be used for  educational purposes  in many ways .The first thing that  comes to my mind is to use Blogs to improve students' writing skills, for instance,to post writing assignments or to set up a forum where students discuss and share their ideas can be very useful. To do these things on-line gives students extra opportunities and more freedom  to practice their writing. Teachers may also  use Blogs as a resource for reading activities by  putting important links or  sharing some enjoyable articles.Another idea can be to prepare a part  to patch up some motivating ideas,  because  I strongly believe that motivation is very crucial in language learning .Lastly, blogs can be used as a supplementary lesson material for  boosting  formal school instruction .For example,to put extra explanations ,giving more exercises about a grammar point or sharing videos which include useful information. For example I found this presentation useful and I wanted to share with you!
